Proteins and DNA

The message contained in DNA is spelled out using 3 consecutive bases called a codon. Each codon codes for an amino acid. Proteins are composed of a sequence of amino acids. A gene is the sequence of codons that codes for a complete protein.

Proteins participate in virtually every process within cells and are therefore essential to the proper functioning of organisms.
